The word Reiki is Japanese and can simply be translated as ‘universal energy’ or ‘universal life force’. It is a natural healing energy that is activated by the practitioner’s intention. The practice of Reiki is an original method of healing, developed by Mikao Usui in Japan, early in the 20th Century. 'Usui Do' or 'Usui Teate' as it was then known, had its origins in Buddism, Shinto and various martial arts. Its original intention was as a path for Usui's students to self heal; a path to self fullfilment. As a side benefit, Usui Sensei's students could also use the energy to heal others. When the practise was brought to the West, it became known as Reiki, a hands on healing method and any connections to a spiritual path were not mentioned.
Eastern medicine has always recognised and worked with this energy – known as ‘prana’, ‘chi’ or ‘ki’. Acupuncture, Tai Chi, Yoga and Shiatsu are also based upon the free-flow of this energy in a person. Scientists now know that this ‘universal energy’ does exist in the universe, and indeed everything in the universe is actually made from this energy. Reiki itself is a warm and loving energy. Reiki is not a religion and there is no requirement for any belief in any religion or spiritual creed, or even in Reiki itself for Reiki to work – Reiki works anyway, whether or not you believe in it.
Reiki is a non-invasive therapy whose aim is to treat holistically and to restore homeostasis - the body’s natural ability to balance and heal itself. Reiki is a gentle yet powerful complementary therapy that may be used with confidence alongside orthodox healthcare. It is a wonderful way to expand the range of treatment options available.
What is a Reiki treatment like?
A Reiki treatment is like finding serenity and peace...a blissful experience.
It starts by the recipient lying down on a comfortable therapy couch, covered by a lovely cosy blanket, in a peaceful and supportive environment. You will remain fully clothed but you will be asked to remove your shoes and glasses; perhaps loosen tight belts. Here at Leaf House there will usually be gentle soothing music playing in the background to help produce a state of deep relaxation; you can close your eyes and drift away…
Veronica, a Reiki Master/Teacher, will gently place her hands upon or above you, non-intrusively, in a series of positions - usually from the head and and working down to the feet. Holding the positions for a few minutes allows healing energy to flow into you, enabling your energy system to balance itself, release stress and promote your body’s natural ability to heal itself.
The treatment takes about an hour. As the treatment progresses, you might feel warmth or heat, or tingling from the practitioner’s hands; sometimes coolness, maybe nothing at all; just deeply relaxed. Some people fall deeply asleep. Other sensations may include seeing coloured lights or images; perhaps you might feel as though you are floating. Sometimes, emotional releases occur - laughing or perhaps tears. This can be either during or after the treatment and is a very positive part of the healing process - you will feel much better afterwards. All this is normal and perfectly OK. Reiki will only work for the person’s highest good and therefore can do no harm.
Even one single Reiki session may make a difference; however the effect of Reiki is cumulative and a course of regular treatments may be more effective. These may be weekly, fortnightly or less often. Many clients then like to ‘top up’ the benefits on a monthly basis after their initial course of treatments. Treatments are reviewed as necessary and are always subject to your own preferences; they can be changed at any time in line with progress.
It is extremely important to note that Reiki is not an alternative to conventional medicine! Please do not stop taking or change the dose of any prescribed medications or treatments without consulting your GP or specialist first. You should always consult a GP about acute or infectious conditions, and in connection with problems of an urgent nature.
Treatment Duration: - approx. 60 minutes - £30.00
